Music of Brazil

Saturday February 25, 2006
I wish I were in Rio today. Actually, there are many days I wish I were in Rio, but with Carnaval about to begin, it’s difficult not to think about the sound of a bateria pounding out the beat to a Samba-enredo. Or the frenetic energy of the dancers in the Samba School Parade with costumes in such vivid colors that everyday life begins to resemble a black and white photograph.

Of course, it doesn’t need to be a special time of the year to enjoy the sound of Brazilian music. If you think Brazilian music is just samba and bossa nova, there are a lot of surprises waiting for you as you get acquainted with a spectrum of musical styles that are as wide as the country itself and as colorful as a Rio street parade.
