When Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez star in a movie together, it's bound to generate a tabloid feeding frenzy. But no amount of noise can dampen my anticipation at hearing the music and witnessing the life of one of salsa's greatest voices and innovators, Hector Lavoe.
Born in Puerto Rico, Lavoe, known as "El Cantante" (The Singer), rose to fame as one of Fania Records greatest luminaries. His collaboration with Willie Colon lasted through eight years and more than ten albums before they split. Lavoe continued on his own, garnering fame and accolades that seem to surprise no one but Lavoe himself.
Lavoe's success may have been the result of his melding salsa and the Jibaro folk music that he grew up with. Never minding any disparaging remarks made about his roots, he would proudly answer all taunts with "I am a Jibaro".
I can't wait to see this movie. El Cantante is currently in post production and scheduled to be released late this year.
