Ray Barretto, Remembered

Latin jazz legend Ray Barretto was born in Brooklyn, NY and raised in "el barrio", East Harlem and the Bronx. His death in February saw the passing of one of the leading forces in salsa and Latin jazz.
This week, the New York City Council will hold a special ceremony honoring his life and achievements. New York City council members will be receiving a double CD commemorative box set of the best of Barretto, recently released by Fania, the label for which Barretto recorded the majority of his salsa discography.
In another event honoring the iconic conga player, composer and bandleader, the Sugarloaf Music Latin Jazz Festival will be presenting a musical tribute to Barretto on June 2nd and 3rd (both at 8 PM). The concert will feature Ray Vega, also a South Bronx native and a veteran of, not only Barretto's own band, but also those of Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, Hector Lavoe, and more. Barretto's son, Chris Barretto, has embraced alto saxophone as his instrument of choice, and will be making his debut at the the concert.
