CD Review: Del Castillo - Brotherhood
Thursday June 1, 2006
A soundtrack can sometimes overshadow the movie it's meant to augment and intensify. Sometimes it's because the music is grating, or because it seems to be at odds with the movie's theme.
But other times it's just because the music is so good, you can't help but pay attention to the instrumental and vocal virtuosity assaulting your senses. That's the way I felt watching Robert Rodriguez' Once Upon a Time in Mexico.
I've since found out that 9 of the movie's tracks were by Austin-based Del Castillo. Now, with earphones blocking out the world, I can focus exclusively on this dynamic band. Their new album Brotherhood is a banquet of sound, mixing flamenco guitar, heavy percussion and rock.
By the way, since Del Castillo is currently performing live, check the June concert listings to see if you'll have a chance to see them this summer.
