CD Review: GoTan Project - Lunatico
Wednesday October 4, 2006
Lunatico is Paris-based GoTan Project's third album, and it has been eagerly awaited by tango fans worldwide - quite a different fate than their first CD, La Revancha del Tango, which became a hit in Europe two full years before it was even introduced into the U.S.
GoTan is serious about continued experimentation with standard and more modern tango elements. The high-tech electronics are still there, but in Lunatico the addition of full tango ensemble instrumentation, some rhythmic surprises and even a little rap makes for an adventurous and often surprising musical trek. When was the last time you've thought of rap in connection with Argentine tango?
And, no, the name of the album is not what tango purists think of GoTan founders Solal, Makaroff and Muller. It was the name of Argentina's legendary singer Carlos Gardel's horse.
