MTV Latin American Music Awards - Finally in Latin America
Friday October 27, 2006
The MTV Latin Music Awards were held in Mexico City last week, finally moving south and out of the U.S. for the first time. And if the raucous reaction to actor Diego Luna's comment: "MTV finally understood that Miami is not Latin America" is any indication, it's about time.
Julieta Venegas won "Best Solo Artist", while alt-rock band Panda claimed "Best Group" and "Best Alternative Artist" prizes. Shakira took home "Song of the Year" with "Hips Don't Lie", while Mexico's Mana grabbed "Best Rock Artist" honors , "Video of the Year" with their "Labios Compartidos", along with a special award celebrating 20 years of fine rock 'n roll. Reggaeton's Daddy Yankee was honored as "Artist of the Year".
Of course, all of these well-earned honors seemed to be overshadowed by Robbie Williams, who not only won the award for "Best International Pop Artist", but also performed "Rock DJ" during the show, at which time he took the opportunity to moon the audience.
With all the musical talent sitting in that audience, you'd think they could find a better act that William's to represent MTV's first non-U.S. awards show.
