Celia Cruz: The Musical

Wednesday April 18, 2007
Celia Cruz appeared off-Broadway in Hommy, the Latin opera written by Larry Harlow and based on The Who's Tommy. Now, four years after we've lost the 'Queen of Salsa', her story is coming back - as a musical, of course. Celia Cruz: The Musical is billed as "the story of an artist's love for her country revealed through a musical life that spans for more than 60 years".

The musical is scheduled to go on tour starting in September this year with stops in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Dallas and Washington D.C.

But wait, there's more. If you think you've got the chops to portray Celia, her husband Pedro Knight or others in the play and you're bilingual, auditions are being held April 30th at the Nola Studios in New York.

By the way, with all the remastered Fania albums still appearing almost weekly, you can actually get a remastered version of the original Broadway production of Hommy with Cruz in the lead.
