CD Review: Spanish Harlem Orchestra - United We Swing
Saturday May 19, 2007
The Spanish Harlem Orchestra is a big band comprised of New York veteran Latin musicians. Under the direction of pianist/arranger/producer Oscar Hernandez, SHO's first album Un Gran Dia En El Barrio was nominated for a grammy while 2004's Across 110th St. won one.
United We Swing is SHO's tribute to the big band sound of Afro-Cuban music from the 1970s & 80s, the heyday of the Nuyorican sound. The album is almost eerie in its recreation of the music, but then, many of these musicians participated in its creation.
