Beto Cuevas Fights To Protect Chile's Patagonia
Thursday July 12, 2007
Whenever I dream of where I'd like to retire (as if that's ever going to happen), it's always a dream of someplace far away from here. Somewhere near the top of the paradise list is Patagonia, the beautiful, pristine area bounded by the Pacific and the Andes, mostly in Chile.
But Patagonia may not continue to resemble paradise for long. A Spanish conglomerate and Chilean company are planning to build four hydroelectric plants in the area's main rivers. These plants would result in vast flooding. Another Canadian company will be cutting its way through 1,200 miles of national parks and pristine forests in order to bring the generated electricity to the north of Chile. What a shame.
Beto Cuevas, ex-frontman for La Ley, one of Chile's greatest rock bands, thinks so too. Cuevas has joined with the National Resources Defence Council (NRDC) in their effort to look for alternative ways of supplying electricity. To that end, he's made a video outlining the problem and asking for help. You can watch the video, see the magnificence of the area and make up your own mind.

By the way, Cuevas has been busy since he left La Ley. He's moving toward film, acting in 2006's La Mujer de Mi Hermano and playing a satanic cult leader in this year's Borderland. He's also rumored to be working on a new solo album.
