CD Review: Maria Volonte - Yo Soy Maria
Thursday July 12, 2007
A lot of the tango albums I've been listening to lately are neo-tango, a genre that has its roots in traditional tango but then gets experimental, usually with the addition of electronics.
Maria Volonte has made a name for herself singing traditional tango, but in Yo Soy Maria, she goes in a different direction, taking some well-known tango classics and fusing them with jazz and bossa nova.
With Volonte's dusky mezzo voice, impeccable timing and styling, the mix works well. So well that you feel like the fusion is an organic outgrowth of tango, rather than an artificial construct.
Listen and see if you don't agree.
