2008 Tejano Music Award Winners

Thursday March 13, 2008
Texas natives Jay Perez and Elida Reyna took home awards for the best male and female vocalists at the Tejano Music Awards last week. In the past, these awards haven't gotten as much attention as some of the other Latin music award programs, but I have a feeling that's about to change. In case you are not familiar with these very talented artists- or if you love them and want to know more about them - you can pay a virtual visit to Perez and Reyna on their respective MySpace sites as well as listen to samples of music.

I used to be part of the voting members, Tejano music is facing its own musical recession. There are few artists that still produce “pure” tejano music, and that’s why the winners look the same every year. The most respected musician now has to be Jimmy Gonzalez, that senor es talentoso.

The thing is, Tejanos don’t really listen to tejano music anymore, perhaps not even tex-mex. What’s truly a sensation are those norteno bands from Monterrey and Tamaulipas, or tejanos making it big with a more “mexican” stance like Intocable or La Mafia. Groups like Duelo, Arnulfo Jr., Solido, Los Palominos, Costumbre, Intenso etc…

TEJANO MUSIC SEEMS TO HAVE LOST IT’S APPEAL SINCE THE DEATH OF SELENA, BUT, TEJANO DIDN’T REVOLVE AROUND SELENA, THERE ARE OTHER AND BETTER ARTISTS THAN HER, BEFORE HER AND AFTER HER. TEJANO IS OVERSHADOWED BUT THE INFLUX OF RADIO STATIONS CATERED TOWARDS PEOPLE FROM MEXICO, DALLAS TEXAS NO LONGER HAS A TEJANO STATION, FOR THE SIMPLE FACT THAT THERE ARE 8 MEXICAN RADIO STATIONS IN DALLAS, AND A COMMUNITY RADIO STATION ONLY PLAYS IT FOR 4 HOURS A DAY. TEJANO MUSIC LOVERS NEED TO TAKE A STAND AND SUPPORT OUR MUSIC, OUR ONDA AS IT IS CALLED. THE DEATH OF SELENA WAS OVERWHELMING, BUT TAKE NOTE THE DURING HER DOMNINEERING THE TEJANO MUSIC AWARDS, OTHER FEMALE SINGERS HAD BETTER MUSIC, SHELLY LARES, LAURA CANALES (RIP), ELSA GARCIA, LETTY GUVALL, ELIDA REYNA. JENNIFER PENA WAS THE A WINNER BEFORE SHELLY LARES, WHY, BECAUSE OF HER MANAGEMENT COMPANY, Q-PRODUCTIONS, NOT BECAUSE OF HER TALENT. TEJANO MUSIC LIVES ON, AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO, KEEP IT ALIVE BY KEEPING IT ALIVE IN YOUR HEART AND SUPPORT.

Rick, how ironic that you are sitting here complaining about what has happened to Tejano Music yet you find the nerve to post a comment about Jennifer Pena winning before Shelly “not because of her talent but because of her management? Her management, Q-Productions managed hundreds of other artists who did not come close to Jennifer’s achievements, even post Q-Productions. Perhaps what happened to Tejano Music is because some people never appreciated the hard work our artists gave us. Jennifer worked hard and crossed international barriers! Instead of being proud, you choose to berate her? Think of everything she gave us at such at an young age. Not to mention that 2 days ago she was STILL giving of herself to our soldiers in Ft. Hood, TX. Do the math & figure out how many years this girl has been giving of herself and you still can’t show her some respect? With countless awards, including several Tejano Music Awards, Billboard, Premio Lo Nuestro, Latin Grammy and Grammy’s nominations…all of this not because of her talent? Not possible. Sounds to me, YOU are part of the reason for Tejano Music’s decline. Nothing was ever appreciated and obviously still isn’t. There is no mystery what happended to Tejano Music. You and people like you happened to Tejano Music. So don’t complain, respect our deserving artists, psst, present and future, change your attitude, give credit where credit is due and maybe someday Tejano Music will rule again. It will never happen with comments like the one you made about such a fine deserving Artist who gave so much to Tejano Music!

WELL I MAY NOT KNOW THE TRUE MEANING OF TEXANO MUSIC. YET I DO BELIVE IN CHANGES. OUR TEXANO MUSIC HAS CHANGED. AND I THINK ITS GOOD THING. KNOW WE HAVE MUSIC FROM GROUPS LIKE DUELO. WHO HAS BROUGHT CHANGE TO US. IN MY PERSONAL OPINON. I FEEL EVERY ONE NEEDS A CHANGE FOR THE BETTER. WHY NOT GIVE BANDS LIKE DUELO A CHANCE TO RISE AND SUECCEDE.
