Mexico Sets Two Musical World Records

Mexico has been a hotbed of record-setting citizens this year. Besides setting records for the largest meatball in the world (Cancun), the largest cheesecake (Mexico City) and the most people kissing (Mexico City), the world also witnessed two musical world records being smashed by enthusiastic Mexican performers.

On August 30, 2009, Guadalajara was the scene of 549 mariachi bands playing in unison, a musical feat that any amateur orchestra member must consider astounding. (Do you remember your musical group ever being able to effectively play together?) The bands played for ten minutes, ending with "Cielito Lindo" and "Guadalajara."

A representative of the Guinness Book of World Records attended to testify to the feat and present the award. The previous record was set by 520 mariachi bands playing in San Antonio, TX in 2007.

Watch Mexico City mariachis break world record

The previous day, 13,957 people crowded the streets in Mexico City to perform Michael Jackson's "Thriller" as a tribute to the late 'king of pop' who was finally laid to rest last week. I know that lots of groups the world over have been eager to achieve this world record but, right now, Mexico City definitely has the edge although I'm not sure whether or not this is official at the moment.

I'm not much of a world record follower, but watching the crowds in Mexico City was inspiring.  If they need one more person to break the record, I'm there!
