In a continuation of the unexpected trend of artists known for their recordings in one language crossing over to another, the popular Nelly Furtado releases Mi Plan this week, her first Spanish-language album.
With record sales down in just about all genres and languages, the trend could be the result of artists searching for a more lucrative market. Or, maybe they're just tired of the status quo and are eager to flex their musical wings, so to speak.
But I don't think that's the case with Furtado. Her last R&B/hip hop album Loose was a smash hit and it's not like she's been recording the same type of music over and over again -- Mi Plan is only her fourth studio album.
One of the things she has said is that the new album is a 'thank you' to all of her Spanish-speaking fans; to my mind this brand of thanks is only as good as the music recorded.
In that case, Mi Plan is a pretty effective 'thank you' delivered with style and an unerring ear to the best that Latin pop has to offer.
