The popular Latin Urban group Calle 13 made history at the 12th Annual Latin Grammy Awards. With their nine trophies, Calle 13 led by far the list of winners of this year's event. Their album Entren Los Que Quieran received the Album of the Year Award while the hit song "Latinoamerica," from the same production, obtained both the Record of the Year and Song of the Year Award.
Besides the General category, Calle 13 also collected trophies in the Urban, Tropical and Alternative fields. In the Urban category, Entren Los Que Quieran was the winner of the Best Urban Music Album of the Year Award. The single "Baile De Los Pobres" won the Best Urban Song Award.
The songs "Vamo' A Portarnos Mal" and "Calma Pueblo" provided Calle 13 with the awards for Best Tropical Song and Best Alternative Song. The video from the single "Calma Pueblo" also gave the Puerto Rican group, the Best Short Form Music Video Award.
Calle 13 was by far the brightest star of the night. However, other popular Latin music artists received important awards in different categories. The Puerto Rican singer and songwriter Sie7e was awarded with the Best New Artist Award. In the Pop category, Colombian singer Shakira and the legendary Latin Pop artist Franco de Vita were honored with trophies for their albums Sale El Sol and En Primera Fila. As expected, the popular Mexican band Mana won the Best Rock Album by a Duo or a Group with Vocal Award thanks to the band's hit album Drama Y Luz.
The Regional Mexican category was dominated by legendary artists such as Vicente Fernandez (Best Ranchero Album) and Marco Antonio Solis (Best Regional Mexican Song). In the Norteno genre, their MTV Unplugged album gave Los Tigres del Norte the Best Norteņo Album Award.
The 2011 Latin Grammy Awards delivered outstanding performances including the beginning act featuring Calle 13 with the Los Angeles philharmonic conductor Gustavo Dudamel. Duet performances were also among the favorite entertainment acts of the night. Romeo Santos and Usher brought a nice show with "Promise," the current number one Latin song on the Billboard charts.
The 2011 Latin Grammy Awards were definitely a very exciting event. This edition will probably move to history as the year Calle 13 took it all. However, there is a better way to define the essence of this year's event: Latinoamerica!
