Caetano Veloso, one of the most influential Brazilian artists in history, is celebrating today his 70th birthday. Last month, the legendary Latin music artist received an early 'gift' from The Latin Grammy organization, which selected him as the 2012 Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year.

A talented and prolific songwriter, Caetano Veloso has been hailed by the New York Times as one of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century. His repertoire has produced some of the most enduring songs in Brazilian music including tracks such as "Sampa," "Queixa," "Haiti" and "O Leaozinho."

Since the 1960s, Caetano Veloso has been shaping the sounds of modern Brazilian music. Alongside Gilberto Gil, Cateano Veloso built the music that defined the sounds of Brazilian Tropicalia, a movement that came to symbolize Brazil's own hippie revolution during a time when the country was immersed in a brutal dictatorship.

For the past five decades, Caetano Veloso has been inspiring people around the world with his music. Besides his outstanding songwriting skills, Caetano Veloso's sweet voice and fantastic guitar playing have transformed him into one of the most beloved Brazilian artists of all time. For all the wonderful music he has produced, the Latin music world has a very good reason to celebrate today Caetano Veloso's birthday.
