The popular Mexican music artist Espinoza Paz, one of the leading names in the field and a top runner of this year's Billboard Mexican Music Awards, has just announced his retirement from the music business. The singer from Sinaloa used his Twitter page @EspinozaOficial to share the shocking news with his fans. "I can't say why... but starting from 2013, I am leaving music," said Espinoza Paz.
Although the reasons behind Espinoza Paz's decision are unknown, it seems quite evident the artist has serious concerns regarding his own safety. In a different tweet, Espinoza Paz said "money is worthless when you can't have peace of mind."
All this, of course, is quite sad for Regional Mexican music and Latin music as a whole. Many questions are still left in the air: What is the real power of drug lords in the Mexican music business especially the so-called Narcocorrido genre? Is there anything the Latin music business can do about the constant pressure criminal organizations are putting on Regional Mexican music artists? I think it is about time to have a serious debate on this.
