After the successful release of her previous two albums, in particular her self-title debut work Ceu, this rising star of Brazilian music has just hit the market with her new album Caravana Sereia Bloom. Defined by its Bohemian appeal and a funky sound, this production includes 13 tracks featuring songs in Portuguese and English. The following is an overview of Ceu's roadtrip stories.

The Concept Behind 'Caravana Sereia Bloom'

There is a lot of thinking behind the making of Caravana Sereia Bloom. This album is the result of the personal inspirations that Ceu collected during her traveling between Sao Paulo and Brazil's Northeast. As she has stated, Caravana Sereia Bloom is an album focusing on roadside stories and tales.

Because of the concept that defines this album, Caravana Sereia Bloom has a very Bohemian flavor and a mythological sense of the different things that happen to people in the road. This flavor is also responsible for injecting this production with a sound that is very psychedelic similar to what we can find in the Tropicalia movement that defined Brazil's own hippie revolution during the 1960s.

Before releasing the album, Ceu had placed the tracks of this production under a file named Studies On The Road. Since she was not convinced about that name, she decided to combine the title of one of the tracks with a word from another song. In the end, she added the word Caravana in front of the other two words creating the final title for this production.

A Funky Sound

Caravana Sereia Bloom is extensively defined by a very funky sound, which is adorned with all kinds of musical influences ranging from Reggae ("You Won't Regret It") to Cumbia ("Contravento"). The album offers nice arrangements and Ceu's voice fits perfectly the Bohemian and psychedelic sound that surrounds this work.

Listening to Caravana Sereia Bloom is a bit like listening to Tropicalia music. It is very experimental and far from mainstream sounds. Some of the singles that better capture the soul of this production include "Amor De Antigos," "Baile De Ilusao," "Palhaco" and "Retrovisor".

Because of its style, Caravana Sereia Bloom is an album that can be easily placed within the world of Latin Alternative music. I believe you can fully appreciate this album if you do not look at it as another Brazilian music title but rather as an alternative work full of sounds that are far away from the repetitive and commercial mainstream world.

Ceu also added a couple of English-language songs into this production including tracks like "You Won't Regret It," "Fffree" and "Streets Bloom". Although I think these tracks are not as strong as the Portuguese songs in the album, they help Ceu to enhance the global appeal of Caravana Sereia Bloom.

'Caravana Sereia Bloom' - Bottomo Line

Overall, Caravana Sereia Bloom is a very pleasant album to listen to. Its prevalent funky, psychedelic sound is captivating. Besides being a Brazilian music work, Caravana Sereia Bloom is also an album that fits nicely into the Latin Alternative field. Because of this, this album has all the potential to please people who are looking for non-mainstream, commercial music. Caravana Sereia Bloom is definitely a solid step in the music career of this talented Brazilian singer. This is definitely one of the nicest surprises of 2012.
