The Bottom Line

Cautivo is Chayanne's best album to date, with a strong, new direction. Gone are track after track of romantic crooning; instead we're offered guitar accented pop leaning strongly to rock, dynamic, impeccably produced and musically engaging.

Guide Review - CD Review: Chayanne - Cautivo

Puerto Rican pop singer Chayanne is a teen idol. With over 10 million albums sold worldwide, Chayanne got his start with the boy band "Los Chicos", until they went out of business and he went solo in 1984.

Cautivo is his 13th album, and in Chayanne's case, 13 is a very lucky number. Previous albums were pleasant enough, a blend of light romantic pop that, while often big hits with his consituency, were rather unremarkable and tended to blend together into one predicatable and sometimes unmemorable sound. His last album, Sincero indicated that Chayanne was ready to move into a more dynamic sound and Cautivo continues that direction with an even stronger musical statement.

Cautivo, Chayanne's first album for the Norte label, is sheer pleasure, with strong ballads and driving pop/rock tracks, most accompanied by wonderful guitar stylings. "Me Llenas De Ti" is a ballad with an emotive, harmonic chorus that really soars. "No Te Preocupes Por Mi" and "Curame" are, to my ear, more rock then pop (but then that can be a rather thin line) and could easily motivate even a couch potato to trip out a few rock steps. "Swing" is just that, a good swing tune and something unexpected on an album full of nice surprises.

If you think you know what you'll get with a Chayanne album, try this one and you're in for a pleasant surprise. If you've never heard Chayanne sing, try Cautivo for a change of pace in the Latin pop/rock scene.
