Guide Review - CD Review: Los Tigres Del Norte - Historias Que Contar

Corridos have been the musical documentation of people's lives since the 1840s and the poignant stories of love, loss, deceit, betrayal and family issues are probably not that different today except for the background and details. For the last 30+ years, Los Tigres del Norte have been using the corrido form along with their wonderful musical sense to continue these chronicles, focusing on the immigrant experience.

Historias Que Contar features some good tales. "Senor Locutor" (Mr. DJ) recounts a story of a man reunited with his son through a radio DJ. "Compre La Muerte A Mi Hijo" teaches that family values are more important than material wealth while "Me Haces Falta" bemoans the loss of love.

Looking at these themes, someone unfamiliar with the norteno tradition might think that this is a sad or depressing album, to which it's necessary to say "au contraire". These themes are set to upbeat polkas, marches and cumbias, while the ballads are usually played for the romantic motifs, and it can be surprising how effective the upbeat music can be to tell some less than cheerful stories.

Historias Que Contar comes in both a single CD and CD/DVD format. The DVD features videos of "Senor Locutor" in a novel and effective manner, with the screen divided into 4 panes and each of the Tigres playing a role in the tale. There's a 'behind the scenes' video that accompanies "Senor Locutor". The second music video is of "Directo Al Corazon" from an earlier album, and is really quite lovely both musically and visually. There's also a photo gallery and, for those budding norteno singers, two karake versions of "Que Te Parece" - one with and one without Los Tigres singing with you.

I'm not a great karaoke fan, but I have to admit that I tried it out, and felt that, with Los Tigres backing me, I sounded great
