The Bottom Line

Monchy y Alexandra are a very popular duo from the Dominican republic that perform romantic bachata with verve, style and great vocals. Their album Exitos and the dual disc Exitos y Mas deliver the best of their previous albums. The music is sweet, romantic and easy to listen to and their "Best of" album is sure to please traditional bachata listeners.

Guide Review - CD Review: Monchy Y Alexandra - Exitos / Exitos Y Mas

The Dominican Republic's Monchy (Ramon Rijo) and Alexandra (Alexandra Cabrera) released their first album Hoja En Blanco in 1999. Since then they've continued to perform a romantic bachata which I think of as bachata 'lite', not because it's inferior in any way (actually, it's true to the traditional, original bachatas which were modeled on the bolero) but because as modern bachata has evolved, it's developed a rawer edge that you don't find in Monchy & Alexandra's music.

Exitos means 'hits' and this recording is a sterling compilation of the most popular songs from the duo's previous albums. It includes "Perdidos" and "Hasta El Fin", from Hasta El Fin, "No Ha Sido Facil", "Hoja En Blanco" and "Pasion" from Hoja En Blanco, and "Dos Locos","Te Quiero Igual Que Ayer" and "Cuando No Se Puede Olvidar" from Confesiones. The dual disc DVD also has 31 cuts on it, so the Exitos Y Mas (and MORE) version certainly seems worth it if you like to watch them perform.

A really good compilation CD is sort of like a shortened opera: all the arias without the recetitive. This CD is definitely a great one.
