Latin Music Concerts For June 2009

By Tijana Ilich, About.com

Here are this month's notable music concerts.

1. Luis Fonsi

This year's crop of Latin pop music albums seems to be dominated by Luis Fonsi's Palabras del Silencio. The Puerto Rican pop star is taking those songs you love on the road; check the schedule to see if he'll be performing in a venue near you.

2. Juan Luis Guerra & 440

An icon of Dominican music, Juan Luis Guerra hasn't released a new album since his award winning La Llave De Mi Corazon but it's always a treat to hear him in person.

  • Jun 26: Hollywood, FL - Hard Rock Live
  • Jun 27: New York, NY - Radio City Music Hall

3. Cafe Tacvba

Mexico's classic rock band Cafe Tacvba is still riding high on the success of their 2007 album Sino. The New York Times called Cafe Tacvba 'one of the most important bands in the hemisphere.' I don't know about that, but I do know that the band puts on a great show.

  • Jun 24: Universal City, CA - Gibson Amphitheatre
  • Jun 26: Chicago, IL - Congress Theater
  • Jun 28: New York, NY - Hammerstein Ballroom

4. Willy Chirino

Miami's Willy Chirino will hopefully thrill his home town with a concert of Cuban-influenced salsa.

  • Jun6: Miami, FL - American Airlines Arena

5. Tito Rojas

Puerto Rican salsa comes to L.A. when salsero Tito Rojas makes an appearance at the Conga Room.

Jun 6: Los Angeles, CA - The Conga Room
  • Jun

6. Alacranes Musical

The popularity of Mexican duranguense music seems to be increasing exponentially and few groups perform it as well as Alacranes Musical whose last album Tu Inspiracion has been nominated for lots of awards this year.

  • Jun 13: El Paso, TX - El Paso County Coliseum

7. Orishas

You'll be entertained to an evening of Cuban hip hop at its best if you can make this concert in New York.

  • Jun 25: New York, NY - S.O.B.'s

8. Bebel Gilberto

Bebel Gilberto, daughter of Brazilian legend Joao Gilberto and singer Miucha, has been on the stage since the age of 7 and recorded her first solo album in 1986. Brazilian music fans should be lining up to spend an evening with this artist.

  • Jun 19: New York, NY - Town Hall

9. Joan Sebastian, Jenni Rivera

One of Mexico's most prolific and best-loved composers, Joan Sebastian will be appearing on three different evenings this month. While I love Sebastian's songs, I can't say he's much of a performer. Luckily he'll have able help from Jenni Rivera and Banda El Recodo.

  • Jun 14: Stockton, CA - Stockton Arena (with Banda El Recodo)
  • Jun 20: Phoenix, AZ - US Airways Center (with Gran Jaripeo)
  • Jun 28: San Jose, CA - HP Pavillion (with Banda El Recodo)

10. La Arrolladora Banda El Limon

Mexico's La Arrolladora Banda El Limon (or simply Banda El Limon) has been popular for quite awhile but in the last few years their popularity has skyrocketed. Catch them on the West Coast in June.

  • Jun 5: Reno, NV - Reno Events Center
  • Jun 13: Los Angeles, CA - Nokia Theatre Live
  • Jun 21: Del Mar, CA - Del Mar Fairgrounds
