Latin Music Concerts For December 2008

By Tijana Ilich, About.com

Here are this month's notable concerts.

1. Olga Tanon

The Conga Room used to be the premier Latin music and dance club in Los Angeles until it closed in 2006. Now, the new Conga Room is reopening as part of the LA Live! Entertainment complex and the opening act is Puerto Rico's merengue queen, Olga Tanon.

  • Dec. 4: Los Angeles, CA - The Conga Room

2. Belanova

Mexican-synth is really growing in popularity and no one has the edge on Belanova out of Guadalajara. Their current album is Fantasia Pop and it seems to be on all the award lists this year.

  • Dec. 5: Chicago, IL - Aragon Ballroom
  • Dec. 6: Los Angeles, CA - Club Nokia

3. RBD

2008 is the year that RBD has announced it is breaking up but I guess that it still has a couple of concerts to go before it's all official. For the curious, read the RBD concert review held at the same venue in 2007.

  • Dec. 5: Universal City, CA - Gibson Amphitheatre

4. Angel y Khriz

Here's one for reggaeton fans as Luny Tunes' proteges Angel Y Khriz give you a chance to hear their hits from their 2008 album Showtime.

  • Dec. 11: Sunnyvale, CA - Barcelona

5. Xtreme

If you like the Dominican music, then this might be the concert to see as the Bronx boy group puts on the ritz at Club Nokia. Xtreme won a 2008 Premio Lo Nuestro award for 'song of the year' with "Infieles."

  • Dec. 13: Los Angeles, CA - Club Nokia

6. Eddie Palmieri

The Conga Room is not the only reopening in Los Angeles. The famous Hollywood Palladium has been refurbished and reopened in October 2008. Leased to Live Nation, there's some excellent acts scheduled for the historic venue not the least is iconic Puerto Rican pianist Eddie Palmieri.

  • Dec. 13: Hollywood, CA - Hollywood Palladium

7. Alejandra Guzman

Mexican rocker Alejandra Guzman will be performing in Houston; maybe she stayed on after the Latin Grammy awards were held in that town and - if you saw the show - you got a preview of what her concert will be like.

  • Dec. 10: Hidalgo, TX - Dodge Arena
  • Houston, TX - Arena Theatre

8. Jose Alberto 'El Canario'

Here's another treat at the new Conga Room: salsero Jose Alberto will be entertaining you for the evening. Although 'El Canario' is associated with Puerto Rican style salsa, he's actually from the Dominican Republic but grew up in P.R.

  • Dec. 18: Los Angeles, CA - The Conga Room

9. Pepe Aguilar

Mexico's romantic balladeer Pepe Aguilar is one of the few Latin music acts that you can catch on New Year's Eve.

  • Dec. 31: Universal City, CA - Gibson Amphitheatre

10. Ozomatli

Ozomatli is the Aztec god of dance and music. Ozomatli, the band, hails from Los Angeles and plays a special kind of funk and rock en espagnol. If you're interested in learning more about this terrific group, you can read the interview with Ozomatli's reed man, Ulises Bella.

  • Dec. 11 - 14: San Francisco, CA - Fillmore
  • Dec. 18 - 20: Hollywood, CA - House of Blues
