Listen to 2008 Regional Mexican Song of the Year Nominees

By Tijana Ilich, About.com

Here are the nominees for Best Regional Mexican Song, an award that goes to the tune's composer. Two of the 4 entries are from Freddie Records, the Texas record label that seems to define some of the best in Tejano music. Joan Sebastian as performed by Vicente Fernandez are no surprise but I was a little surprised at the last entry, a pop ballad from the popular group Los Temerarios.

When you're done, you can go and vote for your favorite.

1. Freddie Martinez, Jr - "Buscame En El Cielo" (Performed by Jimmy Gonzales)

Jimmy Gonzalez - IncomparableFreddie Records
Jimmy Gonzalez & Grupo Mazz already have 5 Grammy awards while the composer of "Bucame En El Cielo," Freddie Martinez Jr., has 3 (producer, engineer). It's a shame that I only have 30 seconds of the song to offer, but Tejano music is not getting much cyberspace time these days. The tracks album, Incomparable is also has also been nominated for 'Best Tejano Album.'

2. Charlie Corona & Jesse Turner -"Decirte Te Quiero" (Performed by Siggno)

Siggno - Six PackFreddie Records
Jesse Turner is the lead singer and accordionist of Texas-based Grupo Siggno; Charlie Corona and Turner wrote "Decirte Te Quiero" for Gruppo Siggno's current album, Six Pack. Besides steaming up Billboard's Top Regional Mexican Album chart, Six Pack is also up for 'Best Norteno Album.'

3. Joan Sebastian - "Estos Celos" (Performed by Vicente Fernandez)

Vicente Fernandez - Para SiempreSony BMG
I don't know whether or not "Estos Celos" is the best track on an album of songs composed by the 'people's poet' Joan Sebastian since I liked almost all of the tracks as performed by ranchera king Vicente Fernandez, but it's the one the Latin Recording Academy liked the most.

4. Adolfo Angel - "Si Tu Te Vas" (Performed by Los Temerarios)

Los Temerarios - Si Tu VasFonovisa
Los Temerarios ballads were very popular during the 80s & 90s, although their new album is the first in 6 years. The break-out single "Si Tu Te Vas" was written by Los Temerarios founder Adolfo Angel.
