New Releases for March 18, 2008

By Tijana Ilich, About.com

Here are this week's notable new releases.

1. Ojos De Brujo - Techari Live

Ojos de Brujo had a big hit with 2007's Techari; they took the show on the road and now offer fans of flamenco-fusion a chance to see their live Barcelona concert from December 2006. Techari Live is a 2-disc album featuring both the DVD and audio CD, along with a documentary, video diary and music videos.

2. Cyro Baptista - Banquet of the Spirits

Brazilian percussionist Cyro Baptista is a tour de force in the Brazilian music world. He's been involved with all kinds of music from jazz to pop. His 2004 Beat The Donkey introduced a project of the marriage between Brazilian rhythms, percussion and dance. Now, Baptista brings us Banquet of the Spirits performed by a new quartet and offering music that "eats, swallows & digests" Brazilian cultural musical tendencies. Should be interesting.

3. Melingo - Maldito Tango

Argentina's Daniel Melingo has experimented with all kinds of music from his days in rock bands Los Twist and Los Abuelos de la Nada. He's back to his native tango and he makes the genre his own with his gravel voice and slangy lyrics. Eduardo Makaroff of the Gotan Project has signed Melingo to the group's Manana label.

4. Los Yonics & Guardianes del Amor - Encuentro Romantico

Popular Mexican group Los Yonics specializes in tropical/light ballads; Los Guardianes del Amor are also known for their romantic ballads. The 'romantic encounter' entails a mix of the popular ballads of the two groups.

5. David Amaya - Gitanos De Buenos Aires

Spanish guitarist David Amaya, a member of Argentinean pop singer Diego Torres' band, got together with a band of gypsies from Buenos Aires to make this album. Part Gipsy Kings, part neo-tango, part pop, this album is going to interest anyone who wants to listen to music that's not quite like any other. Warner is rereleasing the 2007 album for those who missed it the first time around.
