Latin Music New Releases for Sept. 9, 2008

By Tijana Ilich, About.com

Here are this week's notable new releases.

1. R.K.M. y Ken-Y - 'The Royalty /La Realeza'

The popular reggaeton duo is back with their 3rd studio album featuring guest artists Plan B, Don Omar, Hector Acosta,J-Co and Ivy Queen. I listened to the two released singles from the album "Mas Dias Sin Ti" (currently in the Listening Booth) and "Tu Regalo Amores" and both songs are more like romantic pop - with the addition of a dem-bow rhythm.

2. Jenni Rivera - 'Jenni'

Banda diva Jenni Rivera is back with a new album and given that the album's single "Culpable O Inocente" comes on the heels of her recent arrest for hitting a fan in North Carolina, you have to wonder which event happened first - the arrest or the song?

3. Ednita Nazario - 'Real: En Vivo' (DVD)

For fans of Puerto Rican pop singer/songwriter Ednita Nazario, this DVD is a good deal. Shot in May, 2007 at the Puerto Rico Coliseum, the package contains 21 DVD tracks and 11 CD audio tracks.

4. Chayanne - 'De Piel A Piel'

A new album by Puerto Rican star Chayanne is always a major event, no more so than this month when he stars in the mini-series Gabriel playing the lead/vampire by the same name. The album contains the theme song of the series, "Amor Inmortal."

5. El Tigrillo Palma - 'Los Corridos Favoritos Del Jefe'

An album of corridos from this popular norteno group.

6. Frankie Ruiz - 'El Papa De La Salsa'

Puerto Rican Frankie Ruiz was called "El Papa De La Salsa". He performed with La Solucion and Tommy Olivencia before deciding to go solo. After the too-familiar battle with alcohol and drugs, he was arrested for attacking a flight attendant and spent 3 years in federal prison. He died an untimely death in 1998 at the age of 40.

El Papa De La Salsa is a compilation disc of his hits.

7. Sammy Garcia y El Sabor de Puerto Rico - 'El Buen Camino'

Puerto Rican percussionist delivers a hot new salsa album with El Sabor de Puerto Rico.

8. Bebo Valdes - 'Todo Ritmo'

Cuban Bebo Valdes was the director of Havana's Tropicana Nightclub in the 1950s and the father of pianist Chucho Valdes. The Cuban jazz pianist, composer and arranger has been a musical force for years (he's now 91) and Todo Ritmo is a collection of his greatest hits as well as his versions of some of the great Cuban standards.

9. Carlos Franzetti - 'Film Noir'

Argentine-American Carlos Franzetti has composed/arranged both serious and movie music from symphonies and concertos to big band jazz. In Film Noir he reinterprets some of the most familiar film music by composers such as Herbie Hancock, Johnny Mandel, Lalo Schifrin and Burt Bacharach giving them a jazzy, dark style with the help of the Prague Symphony Orchestra.
