Here are this week's notable new releases.
1. 'Buena Vista Social Club At Carnegie Hall'
When Ry Cooder went to Cuba and gathered a group of older, neglected musicians to record the landmark Buena Vista Social Club he was probably surprised that the recording became the best-selling world music album ever. In 1998, the original artists travelled to the U.S. to perform at Carnegie Hall and these songs were recorded at that event.
Some of the numbers are ones that appeared on the original album but the track listing also contains some other classic sones and boleros including "Quizas, Quizas" and "Siboney."
2. Gilberto Santa Rosa - 'Una Navidad Con Gilberto'
Last year Victor Manuelle had great success with his Christmas offering, Navidad A Mi Estilo. This year fellow Puerto Rican salsero Gilberto Santa Rosa has his own Christmas offering with this album. I haven't heard it yet, but one of my favorite Christmas salsa albums also features Santa Rosa with El Gran Combo, Asi Es Nuestra Navidad. Is it really that time already?3. Oscar D'Leon - 'Tranquilamente'
I always look forward to a new album by Venezuela's Oscar D'Leon who has been a major salsa star for over 3 decades. But I have to wonder why the new album is named Tranquilamente when I can't imagine anyone being anything by energized while listening to D'Leon.4. Santacruz - 'Radio Rompecorazones'
Daniel Santacruz is from the Dominican Republic, although he was born in New Jersey. He's part of the 'new bachata' and should be a treat for fans of Dominican music.5. Monica Naranjo - 'Tarantula'
Monica Naranjo is one of Spain's most popular singers; Tarantula was released in April in Europe and has already reached multiplatinum status. The album contains the hit single "Europa."6. Antonio Carlos Jobim - 'Tom Pra Dois'
There's nothing really new on this album, but this is a fine collection of Tom Jobim's compositions - representing some of the best of Brazil's music from the last few decades - and including classics like Astrud Gilberto singing "The Girl From Ipanema", "Fotografia" performed by Jobim and Elis Regina and "Imagina" by Chico Buarque.
7. Willy Chirino - 'En Vivo Desde Miami' (DVD)
Miami's Willy Chirino helped define the Miami sound; in 2006 he gave a concert of some of his biggest hits from his home town. I have to admit I'm puzzled by the DVD blurbs offered by many of the vendor sites that claim Chirino's featured guests at the concert include Celia Cruz, who died in 2003, and Cuban legend Beny More who died in 1963.If anyone sees them perform on this DVD, please let me know.
